God's Essence - Veracity
The Veracity of God is the next attribute we need to look at. Veracity is the absolute truthfulness of God. God is absolute truth. He did not become truth. Truth has always existed in the mind of God. He is the truth from eternity past. God’s truth is infinite perfection (Psalm 86:15; 119:142). God's truth is directed toward Himself and revealed to us. He is the source of all truth. Motivated by love, He reveals His abundant truth to us in His Word, the Bible. His truthfulness guarantees the accuracy of His Word, His divine revelation to us. Scripture is His truth expressed from His unfailing love. In fact, God’s faithfulness is related to the revelation of Himself, to the promises contained in the Bible, and to His grace provision for us (2 Samuel 7:28).
Veracity is manifest in all of His ways (Deuteronomy 32:4). Psalm 25:10 says, “All the paths of the Lord are faithfulness and truth.” Veracity is also demonstrated in all His works. Daniel 4:37 declares that all His works are truth and His ways are just. Revelation 15:3 states, “Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God, the Almighty; righteous and true are Your ways, King of the nations!”
God is true to mankind, but even more important, He is true to Himself. God is never unfaithful to Himself. God cannot lie. He cannot do anything that would violate His absolute truthfulness. If He did, He would not be God. God's love only tells us the truth. God is true to His own character. Man says, “I speak the truth,” but God says, “I am the truth” (John 14:6). In God, every truth in every form of knowledge dwells in absoluteness. That is why the Word of God is absolute truth and can be stated with conviction (Psalm 119:160; John 17:17; 1 John 5:20). Bible doctrine, or truth, is the expression of His integrity.
Part of the mission of the Incarnation and the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ was to reveal the absolute truth of God to mankind (John 6:32). That is why the Apostle John referred to Jesus Christ as “The Word” in John 1:1, 14. The truth as revealed by Christ is the very mind or thinking of Christ. And we are commanded to have the same thinking (I Corinthians 2:16(b); Philippians 2:5; 2 Peter 3:18). God is absolute truth. He honors His Word above His own person. Psalm 138:2(b) says, “For You have magnified Your word according to all Your name.” Therefore, God honors His word in the soul of the believer who is growing spiritually with great blessing (Luke 11:28; Ephesians 3:20). God’s Word always accomplishes that for which it is sent and communicated (Isaiah 55:11). We do not naturally possess truth; we must acquire it. God's plan, will, and purpose for every believer are related to His truth and veracity. It is impossible for the believer to execute the plan of God and thereby glorify Him apart from learning and applying the truth of His Word (John 15:5; Romans 10:17).
Our faith is totally dependent on the absolute veracity of God and what He has revealed to us. Our faith has no merit on our part because it is trust in the one and only true God, in His veracity, and in the truthfulness of His Word. Our faith finds strength in His promises knowing that they are true for all time.
