God's Essence - Applied (Part 2)

The last several posts have been on the essence of God—who God is and the attributes that make up His person. Through these attributes, God makes Himself known to mankind.

We are going to continue to see how these attributes can be applied to our lives, especially when we face adversity or problems. As we study each attribute, we will see how understanding who God is can bring comfort and encouragement, even in the worst of circumstances.

I will provide a quick summary of each attribute, followed by how it can be applied to our lives. This post will cover Love, Eternal Life and Omniscience.

    The Love of God

    [The love of God is probably the most misunderstood characteristic of God.]

    1. God’s love is the absolute virtue and benevolence of His thinking and actions.
    2. God is love. God cannot and does not exist apart from love. (1 John 4:8b, 16).
    3. His love is eternal, unchanging, and unfailing. It is eternal—it has always existed; there has never been a time when it did not exist. God’s love never changes—it does not increase or decrease. God’s love is unfailing—God does not fall in love, and He does not fall out of love. “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3). 1 Chronicles 16:34; Psalm 57:10; Psalm 136.
    4. God’s love is the motivation behind every action toward mankind. “Lovingkindness” is the unfailing love of God and can be translated that way (Psalm 33:4-5a).
    5. The love of God can never be separated from His righteousness and justice (otherwise known as the integrity of God) (Psalm 89:14a; Jeremiah 9:24).
  •     The Love of God Applied
    1. God loves the believer personally because He loves His perfect righteousness in us. When we come to understand and appreciate His love, we reciprocate that love. “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).
    2. The believer can never be separated from the love of God. Nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38, 39).

    The Eternal Life of God

    1. God is eternal. There never was a time He did not exist and there never will be a time that He will not exist. “Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God” (Psalm 90:2b).
    2. God is the absolute, self-existing one; YHWH (Yahweh), the great I AM who has neither beginning or end (Exodus 3:14; Psalm 90:2; 102:27; Jeremiah 10:10).
  •     The Eternal Life of God Applied.
    1. Because of eternal life given at salvation (John 3:16, 36; 10:28), we have no need to fear or worry about anything or anyone.
    2. God created time for mankind. We think in terms of minutes, hours, days, months, years. God does not. Transcendent. He is beyond time and space. God is not constrained by time. 2 Peter 3:8b says, to Him “one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years is like one day.” Time is God’s grace gift to mankind. God gives us time for His plan and purpose. We must use it wisely. The Bible says life is just a vapor trail in the sky for just a moment and then it fades away (James 4:14). Here today and gone tomorrow. Redeem the time! Use time wisely!

    The Omniscience of God

    1. God knows perfectly, eternally, and at the same time all that is knowable. He knows the decisions we make and their full course in our lives; and He knows the decisions we did not make but could have made and what their full course would have been in our lives if we had made those choices instead.
    2. God knows everything and He knew it in eternity past. “Lord, You know all things;” (John 21:17b). “Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold O Lord, You know it all” (Psalm 139:4).
  •     The Omniscience of God Applied.
    1. What is one common characteristic of most problems, troubles, and adversities? Suddenly. Unexpected. Out of nowhere. Surprise. A shock to us. Since God knows everything, the adversities in our life do not take God by surprise; nor is He caught off guard by them. They often surprise us and catch us off guard. But He knew all about every circumstance that we would ever face, and since He knew all about it, and we know He loves us, He has already made a perfect solution for us. All we have to do is stand fast and watch His deliverance in His perfect timing.
    2. God knows and sees everything. He knows our thoughts, our motives, our decisions, and our actions. We cannot hide anything from God. “For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the Lord” (Proverbs 5:21a).
    3. There is no limit to the wisdom and knowledge of God available to the believer. Romans 11:33 says “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!”

If you will learn these and file them away in the memory center of your mind, you will have a very powerful weapon at your disposal the next time adversity strikes.
