God's Essence - Applied (Part 3)
The last several posts have been on the essence of God—who God is and the attributes that make up His person. Through these attributes, God makes Himself known to mankind.
We are going to continue to see how these attributes can be applied to our lives, especially when we face adversity or problems. As we study each attribute, we will see how understanding who God is can bring comfort and encouragement, even in the worst of circumstances.
I will provide a quick summary of each attribute, followed by how it can be applied to our lives. This post will cover the final four attributes: Omnipresence, Omnipotence, Immutability and Veracity.
- God is eternally, wholly, and simultaneously present everywhere (Jeremiah 23:24).
- God fully occupies time and space, but He is not limited by time or space. “Behold heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You” (1 Kings 8:27b).
- Immanence and transcendence. Immanent. His entire essence is always present everywhere throughout His creation (Jeremiah 23:23-24). Transcendent. He exists independently of the created universe. He is not confined to space or time (Deuteronomy 4:39).
- “The eye of the Lord is in every place, watching the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3).
The Omnipresence of God
- The Omnipresence of God Applied
-
- The Lord God goes before us and with us. He never leaves the believer alone (Deuteronomy 31:6, 8). “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5b). “Who goes before you on your way, to seek out a place for you to encamp, in fire by night and cloud by day, to show you the way in which you should go” (Deuteronomy 1:33).
- God sees everything from His throne room in heaven (Psalm 113:5-6). “God is not far from each one of us” (Acts 17:27b).
- We can never get away from the presence of God (Psalm 139:7-10).
- Jesus Christ Himself indwells every believer (2 Corinthians 13:5; Romans 8:10; Galatians 2:20; Colossians 1:27).
- God is all-powerful. No one and nothing is more powerful, and no one has greater authority. Job 11:7; Revelation 4:8; Revelation 19:6 all declare Him to be Almighty God. “Great is our Lord and abundant in strength” (Psalm 147:5b).
- God’s power strenthens us. “And in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone” (1 Chronicles 29:12). “For God has power to help and to bring down” (2 Chronicles 25:8b).
- Jesus Christ is the Creator of the universe. If Jesus Christ created the universe—and He did—do we not think He can take care of our problems?
The Omnipotence of God
- The Omnipotence of God Applied.
-
- If God is all-powerful—and He is—then there is no trouble, difficulty, or adverse circumstance beyond His ability to resolve. “Nothing is impossible for God” (Luke 1:37b).
- Jesus Christ holds the universe together by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3; Colossians 1:17). Remember, Jesus Christ controls history for the benefit of His people.
-
Remember the narrative of Esther with Haman and Ahasuerus and her cousin Mordecai. The big lesson is that the foolish and evil plans of mankind cannot prevent God from accomplishing His plan. Haman’s evil plan was ultimately used by God to deliver the Jews and preserve His people through Esther.
-
Joseph with his brothers in Egypt. “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive” (Genesis 50:20).
- God protects the believer. God is on our side. No one can touch us. No one can ultimately change His plan for us. (Deuteronomy 33:27; 1 John 4:4; Romans 8:31; Romans 8:38-39).
- God assigns guardian angels to protect us (Psalm 91:11-12).
- God never ever changes (Psalm 33:11; 102:27; Malachi 3:6a). “For You are the same and Your years will not come to an end” (Hebrews 1:12). “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19).
- God’s Word never changes. “Forever O Lord, Your Word is settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89). Numbers 23:19.
- God’s faithfulness is a result of His immutability (Lamentations 3:22-23).
The Immutability of God
- The Immutability of God Applied.
-
- God always keeps His promises. (The promises of God are iron-clad, clear-cut statements from God to you personally). God’s promises to Abraham will be fulfilled at the Second Advent of Christ and during the Millennium (Genesis 12:1-3).
- God is faithful to fulfill His Word and to keep His promises even when we, as His children, are faithless (Numbers 23:19; 1 Kings 8:56; Hebrews 6:17-18; 10:23; 2 Timothy 2:13).
- God is faithful to provide everything we need to accomplish His plan and mission for our lives (Philippians 4:19).
- God is faithful to ensure we do not face any testing that is beyond what we are able to handle (1 Corinthians 10:13). When we face adversity, it is a test of whether we will apply the Word of God implanted in our soul.
- However, the negative believer can create his own suffering through wrong decisions and failure to apply the Word of God – that is his choice, not God’s. This is self-induced misery—the result of bad decisions, not a failure of God's faithfulness.
- If we fall under divine discipline, we must recognize it, name our sin and start the recovery process. It is never too late.
- God is absolute truth. “All the paths of the Lord are lovingkindness and truth” (Psalm 25:10). “O Lord God, You are God and Your words are truth” (2 Samuel 7:28).
- His veracity is evident in His words (John 8:45-46).
- His veracity is evident in His ways. “Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth (Psalm 86:11a). Revelations 15:3.
- His veracity is evident in His works (Psalm 33:4; Daniel 4:37).
The Veracity of God
- The Veracity of God Applied.
-
- Our Bible is based on the absolute truth of God... The Only Absolute Truth in the world. All human knowledge is limited and relative.
- God’s Word is the only absolute truth for life. “Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth (Psalm 86:11a).
- God’s truth is the only source of true happiness in life (Jeremiah 15:16).
