God's Essence - Applied (Part 1)

The last several posts have been on the essence of God—who God is and the attributes that make up His person. We looked at Sovereignty, Righteousness, Justice, Love, Eternal Life, Omniscience, Omnipotence, Omnipresence, Immutability and Veracity.

Now we are going to see how these attributes can be applied to our lives, especially when we face any kind of adversity or problem. We will see that thinking about each one of these can bring us great comfort and encouragement in the worst of circumstances.

I will provide a quick summary of each attribute, followed by how each can be applied to our lives. This post will cover Sovereignty, Righteousness and Justice.

    The Sovereignty of God

    1. God is the supreme person of the universe. “For God is the King of all the earth” (Psalm 47:7a). His will and authority are absolute. There is no one greater than God (Deuteronomy 4:39; Hebrews 6:13).
    2. Psalm 24:1 says “The earth is the Lord’s and all it contains, the world and those who dwell in it.”
    3. He is the Creator and maintainer of the universe. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). “Through whom also He made the world” (Hebrews 1:2). He also sustains all things (Colossians 1:15-17).
    4. God carries out His own Sovereign will and pleasure (Isaiah 46:10). God desires that all should be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4).
  •     The Sovereignty of God Applied
    1. His sovereignty means God is in control. He allows us to make our own decisions—both good and bad—but He remains in control.
    2. God’s sovereignty makes decisions for the benefit of every believer (Jeremiah 29:11). Because God is also love, His sovereignty can only make decisions for our benefit.

    The Righteousness of God

    1. God is perfect. “For the Lord is righteousness” (Psalm 11:7a). “The heavens declare His righteousness” (Psalm 50:6a). The heavens also declares there is a Creator. That is why the unbeliever is without excuse (Romans 1:20).
    2. God is absolute good and perfect in nature (Psalm 25:8; 34:8; 86:5;119:68; Luke 18:19).
    3. God’s perfection accept anything less than His righteous standard. God can have nothing to do with sin. “And in Him there is no sin” (1 John 3:5b). “God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5).
    4. We must possess God’s righteousness in order to be acceptable to Him. That is why God gives to us His righteousness at the moment of faith alone in Christ alone (Romans 4:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
  •     The Righteousness of God Applied.
    1. For the believer, God is perfect; therefore, His plan for us is perfect.
    2. In eternity past, God took His perfect knowledge of each one of us, and put it into a perfect plan designed specifically for each of us…He concentrated, focused, and deliberated…“O Lord, You have searched me and known me” (Psalm 139:1).

    The Justice of God

    1. God is perfectly fair and just (Deuteronomy 10:17). “All His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice...” (Deuteronomy 32:4).
    2. There is no partiality with God (Romans 2:11; Ephesians 6:9c).
    3. No one gets away with anything. “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7). “For they sow the wind and they reap the whirlwind” (Hosea 8:7). The greatest demonstration of God’s justice is on the cross when God the Father’s justice judged all sins on the cross.
  •     The Justice of God Applied.
    1. The Supreme Court of Heaven is always in session. We do not need to take God's place as judge. “Do not judge so that you will not be judged” (Matthew 7:1-3).
    2. Our understanding of justice is limited; God’s justice is perfect. Leave it with the justice of God. Only God knows all the facts. Only God’s justice is justice.
    3. Leave room for the justice of God. No mental attitude sins. “Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord” (Romans 12:19).
    4. The Justice of God is always operating in this world. What about corruption in government? God’s justice has all the facts, and nothing is overlooked by Him. His justice operates according to His plan and timing, not ours.
    5. Never doubt there are divine consequences for all kinds of sin and evil, for injustice, violence, and corruption. God knows all the injustices committed. Punishment for injustice belongs to the Lord. Period.
